The new owners seem highly motivated and excited to improve the business and the entire staff were extremely friends. The views on Lake Vermilion are spectacular and my family really enjoyed the slide off the houseboat. We had the Catalina Plus boat and were highly dissatisfied by the condensation build up on the top cabin, leaks in the cupboards, bathroom and patio door during rain (we had to use all our towels to soak up the water) and the bathroom stench from day 1 was horrid. We are rugged, outdoorsy people but when our whole cabin is filled with the stench of waste it is hard to enjoy ourselves. We did bring up our concerns to the owner Kyle during checkout and we were happy to hear that our boat is first on the list for repairs when they get their repaid shed built hopefully this year but that didn't necessarily help us on our vacation we have been looking forward to for a long time. Having a discount off our total would have lessened the blow a bit. Again, a very nice vacation with great views but very expensive ($3,000 for 4 nights) with the quality of the boat.
We spend the weekend on Lake Vermillion last weekend and absolutely loved the lake and the scenery!!! Using a house boat was a great way to see the lake and all of its landscapes. We booked a boat through Vermillion Houseboats last October for our kids for a Christmas present. We upgraded from the 44' Royalist to the 54'Catalina in April. Kyle (the owner) called on the Thursday night before we were to depart on Friday to confirm our reservation. While going through the confirmation we discovered that the boat we had upgraded to had been booked by another family and was not available to us. We then worked out a deal to upgrade to another bigger boat for $200 more and he would supply 30 gallons of gas each day in the deal to help offset some of the cost and help with our inconvenience. My wife and I were excited and took off from the dock Friday afternoon with smiles on our faces. We had another family who had also rented a house boat at the same time so we were cruising together. All in all the trip was good, we all had a blast together. A few problems arose over the weekend. Our water heater quit on Sunday night and I had to fix it from my fishing boat along side of the house boat. We had one of our kids burn their hand pretty bad, 2nd degree burns across her fingers with substantial blisters. We called Kyle to get some ointment and gauze wraps since my first aid kit didn't have these type of bandages in it and he said he couldn't help us out since he was off site and there was no one available to bring us some first aid supplies, kind of an urgent situation!! When we returned back to the docks on Monday morning we unloaded the house boat and proceeded to check out and pay our final bill he would not credit our account for the 30 gallons of gas per day that we had agreed upon before we left the docks on Friday. He said that giving us 30 gallons of gas per day was his cash discount so he couldn't give us the credit. When he called to confirm the reservation that was incorrect he asked me to bring cash but the banks closed before I was done with work and we left to go on the vacation before the banks opened in the morning. You would think since it was a problem with his reservations he could have worked this out. I was not impressed at all with Kyle and how he conducted business and the lack of first aid help in a somewhat urgent situation. I would not recommend Vermillion Houseboats to anyone after our experience. Beautiful lake but very poor houseboat operation.
Great outfitter for houseboats. All the staff were very helpful. Only issue i would mention is that the sewage storage tank on our boat had a vent that was head height while seated on the roof deck. So depending on the wind you get a whiff that will singe your nose hair. Move the pipe and I'd go 5 star all day long.
It was worth doing once, but the boats are getting old and if you dont have enough smell bombs to put in the toilet the sway of the boat will move the waste around so much that the whole main cabin will smell completely of ass. Also the hot tub we had was only a few degrees above luke warm. Still a fun trip though.
This was our first ever family houseboat vacation and we will never forget this vacation! The new owners are great people and went above and beyond our expectations to make sure We had an amazing trip- thank you Kyle & Joy! The scenery is breathtaking at every turn. Lots of great campsites to visit around the lake (our favorite was #6- Private island, fire pit, view and great fishing! ) We had the 55' cruiser and accommodated our group of 8 very comfortably. Even with not so great weather this was a winner and worth every penny! Can't wait to do this again!!
